TIPS FOR EASIER FIRE STARTING & BURNING

FROM MR. WOOD JUDGE

Wood from THE BEST WOOD JUDGE is dry -- It has spent the last year basking in the warm (hot) summer breezes of beautiful Waukesha, Wisconsin.  However, for some reason, every fall and winter we seem to get rained and snowed on.  Surface moisture gets on the wood and makes it more difficult to start.  Here are a few handy hints to help your wood start faster and burn easier!

If you store your wood outside: put a tarp over it to prevent new moisture from getting on the wood.  THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!  Whether you store your wood outside or in the garage, the most important tip I can give you is to bring whatever wood you will burn into the house (not just into the garage) at least one day before burning it.  This practice serves two important functions:

Any surface moisture/dampness will be dried off (I’ve never heard of water burning, except in the polluted Cuyoga River).

The temperature of the wood will be raised to room temperature.  On very cold days, this could be a temperature difference of up to 100 degrees!!

These two tips will make starting your fire much easier.  Also, be sure to use plenty of paper and kindling under the smaller pieces of cross-stacked wood.

Have a warm and cozy winter, and THANK YOU for buying
your firewood from
